Loft Insulation in Liverpool & Merseyside

Cut your energy bills with professional loft insulation in Liverpool and Merseyside

Around 25% of your home's heat escapes through a poorly insulated roof. Loft insulation is one of the most cost-effective home improvements available to Liverpool homeowners β€” it reduces heat loss year-round, makes your home more comfortable in both winter and summer, and can significantly cut your energy bills. With current energy prices, the payback period on a well-installed loft insulation job is shorter than most people expect.

Is Your Loft Insulation Up to Standard?

The UK Government recommends at least 270mm of mineral wool insulation between and over your loft joists for optimal energy efficiency. This is a significant depth β€” roughly a 100mm layer between the joists plus 170mm of insulation rolled across the top in the perpendicular direction.

Many Liverpool homes β€” particularly those built before the 1990s β€” fall well short of this. Some have only 100mm or less. Others have insulation that was correctly installed 20 years ago but has since settled, been disturbed by plumbers or electricians, or simply aged past its effective performance. Even a correctly installed older product may not meet today's recommended standard.

During a free survey we'll measure your existing insulation depth, check for gaps and damage, and give you an honest assessment of whether it's worth topping up or replacing entirely.

Types of Loft Insulation We Install

  • Mineral wool (glass wool) β€” The most widely used and cost-effective loft insulation material for accessible lofts. Installed in two layers β€” between the joists and across them at 90Β° β€” to achieve the full recommended depth. Fire resistant, non-biodegradable, and proven over decades in UK homes.
  • Rock wool β€” A denser mineral wool alternative with slightly better fire resistance and acoustic performance. A good choice where sound transmission through the loft floor is a concern, and for lofts where a firmer product is easier to handle.
  • Blown insulation β€” A loose-fill option ideal for lofts with irregular joist spacing, low ridge heights or difficult-to-reach areas. Particularly effective for filling gaps around pipes, tanks and structural timbers that roll-out insulation can't reach cleanly without cutting.
  • Pipe and tank lagging β€” When your loft is properly insulated, temperatures in the loft space itself drop sharply in winter. Exposed water pipes and cold water tanks become vulnerable to freezing. We include pipe and tank lagging as part of every full loft insulation job to protect your plumbing β€” this is essential, not optional.

Loft Insulation and Boarding β€” Are They Compatible?

Absolutely β€” and this is one of the questions we're most frequently asked by Liverpool homeowners. The concern is completely valid: laying boards directly on full-depth insulation compresses it and reduces its thermal performance. That's a real problem β€” but it has a well-established solution.

Our raised loft boarding system uses a leg framework to lift the boards above the insulation, maintaining the full recommended depth underneath. You get a safe, level storage floor AND properly functioning insulation β€” both at the same time. This is the only correct approach, and it's what we specify on every combined insulation and boarding job we carry out. See our loft boarding page for more detail on how the raised system works.

What Energy Savings Can I Expect from Loft Insulation?

The Energy Saving Trust estimates that properly insulating a completely uninsulated loft can save the average UK homeowner several hundred pounds per year on heating. For homes upgrading from thin or degraded insulation to the full 270mm recommended depth, the saving is smaller but still meaningful. The exact figure depends on your home's size, how you heat it, and your existing insulation level β€” our surveyor can give you a realistic expectation during the free visit.

Beyond the financial saving, the comfort benefit is often the thing homeowners notice most: rooms below the loft are warmer and more consistently heated, draughts from above are reduced, and the home feels more stable in temperature throughout the day.
